Case Study: Wildebeest Development Project Early Works

Project Overview

ExxonMobil PNG (EMPNG) launched a drilling campaign in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea, with the first well intended for the Wildebeest site, located approximately 22km north of Kerema.

Turra was engaged in September 2023 to lead initial field studies, including civil, geotechnical, environmental, and social assessments. The project required the construction of a 45km access road—half of which involved upgrading an existing track, while the other half required new construction across rugged terrain. Additionally, the scope included building five new bridges, upgrading a barge ramp for logistics, and preparing the rig site.

Project Objectives

Turra's Goals:

  • Deliver high-quality field study outcomes while ensuring positive engagement with local communities.

  • Strengthen Turra’s position as EMPNG’s preferred partner for ongoing Gulf Province projects.

  • Provide sustainable employment and business opportunities for local landowners.

Client Objectives (EMPNG):

  • Conduct successful early works, including geotechnical and environmental assessments.

  • Engage and manage consultants for field investigations.

  • Assess infrastructure requirements for access routes and logistics.

  • Deliver feasibility studies and cost estimates for future project phases.

Project Execution

  • Engaged leading geotechnical and environmental consultants to conduct assessments.

  • Constructed helipads along the road alignment to provide site access for survey teams.

  • Provided full logistical support, including transportation, security, and local workforce integration.

  • Conducted infrastructure assessments along the Hiritano Highway and proposed access routes.

  • Developed environmental and social impact reports, ensuring regulatory compliance.

Key Achievements

  • On-Time & On-Budget Completion: The project was successfully delivered within schedule and budget.

  • 3,500 Safe Manhours: No major safety or environmental incidents.

  • Community Engagement: Employed over 50 local workers and resolved legacy landowner disputes.

  • Sustainable Impact: Provided EMPNG with critical feasibility reports, allowing for the next phase of project approval.

Outcome & Impact

Turra successfully met and exceeded project expectations, delivering high-quality field studies while maintaining strong relationships with local communities. The final reports provided by Turra are now being used to guide EMPNG’s next steps for the Wildebeest development.
